The origin of the name Los Angeles was created by Javanese people??yeah here's the story
For centuries, history has held that Los Angeles was founded by Spanish settlers under the direction of Governor Felipe de Neve. However, recently discovered archives reveal a surprising fact: the city's true founder was a Javanese settler named Marwisto from the village of Kaliwungu, Kendal.
In the late 18th century, Marwisto arrived on the west coast of America with his Spanish friend, Carlos. Intending to open rice fields, Marwisto was frustrated by the barren conditions of the land. Wiping away sweat, he complained, "Los (calling Carlos)... angel (difficult), Los...Angel......" which in Javanese means "Carlos... difficult, Carlos... difficult."
Who would have thought that it was from the desperate complaints of Kendal farmers that the name Los Angeles was born.
Realizing that the land was resisting rice seeds, Marwisto and Carlos switched to planting crops better suited to the local climate: grapes, olives, and oranges. These three crops, ironically, have endured and become part of the official emblem of Los Angeles to this day.
Marwisto's agricultural success drew the extreme envy of Governor Felipe de Neve. The Governor launched a systematic campaign to erase the Javanese traveler from the historical record. All documents concerning the origins of "Los... angels" were burned, and the historical narrative was rewritten to glorify the European explorer and deeply bury the story of Marwisto and Carlos.
However, historical truth always has a way of surviving. De Neve's efforts failed miserably, as Marwisto's name was already deeply ingrained in the people's collective memory. In his honor, a settlement was named after the founder, now immortalized as the Mar Vista district. Furthermore, the hills where Marwisto often missed his hometown also became part of history.
The word "Kaliwungu" was slowly absorbed by the local tongue, becoming "Haliwudu," before finally becoming "Hollywood." It is said that the district "Malibu" also derives from the name "Malioboro."
